An overview of active substances (generic names)
Methylprednisolone is a synthetic glucocorticoid steroid drug. This drug is a prednisolone derivative that is used as an anti-allergic, immunosuppressant, and anti-inflammatory agent. Methylprednisolone works by penetrating cell membranes to form a steroid-protein receptor complex. In the cell nucleus, this receptor-steroid protein complex will bind to chromatin DNA and stimulate mRNA transcription which is part of the process of protein synthesis. As an anti-inflammatory, this drug suppresses neutrophil migration, reduces the production of prostaglandins (compounds that function as inflammatory mediators), and causes capillary dilatation. This will reduce the body's response to inflammatory conditions (inflammation).
Indication
The usefulness of Medrol Tablet (methylprednisolone) is for the treatment of the following conditions:
- Like other glucocorticoids, Medrol Tablet (methylprednisolone) is used as an anti-inflammatory drug (inflammation), as an allergic drug, endocrine disease, haematological disorders, and nephrotic syndrome. (Recognize food allergies and how to overcome them).
- Medrol tablets for strep throat medications are also very commonly used. Generally used for the short term. Strep throat / bronchial or acute bronchitis occurs due to various respiratory diseases.
- Can also be used in the treatment of arthritis (rheumatism). (Complete Explanation of Joint Pain).
- In the treatment of autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus in the acute period and long-term therapy, hemolytic anemia and erythoblastopenia.
- This drug is also used as a treatment for multiple sclerosis, nonpenetrating spinal cord injury, steven johnson syndrome, exfoliative dermatitis, psoriasis, acute and chronic eye inflammation, chronic and acute lymphocytic leukemia, chronic and acute lymphocytic leukemia, insufficient adrenal cortex, thrombocytopenia purpura in adults, and vestibular neuritis.
- Counter indication

- In addition, administration of live vaccines or weakened vaccines is also contraindicated for someone who is using immunosuppressive drugs such as Medrol Tablet (methylprednisolone). Exceptions to this rule are patients undergoing complete corticosteroid replacement therapy, for example, for addison's disease, which may follow standard immunization protocols.
Side Effects of Medrol Tablets
Here are some of the side effects of Medrol Tablet (methylprednisolone):
- Side effects of Medrol Tablet (methylprednisolone) on short-term use such as fluid and sodium retention, hyperglycemia and glucose intolerance, hypokalemia, disorders of the digestive tract and ulceration, reversible depression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, and changes in mood such as euphoria mild, nervous, restless, depressed, delusional, hallucinatory, and violent behavior.
- Effects of long-term use are all side effects on short-term use plus cushing syndrome (one feature: facial swelling), hirsutism or virilism, impotence, irregular menstruation, peptic ulcer disease, weight gain, congestive heart insufficiency, edema, hypertension, cataracts and increased eye intraocular pressure / glaucoma, myopathy, osteoporosis, impaired wound healing, impaired carbohydrate metabolism, muscle weakness, and vertebral compression fractures.
- Long-term use of this drug also causes a decrease in the immune system making it more susceptible to fungal or viral infections.
- The most serious side effect is that the adrenal glands stop producing cortisol naturally.
Attention
The following are things that patients should be aware of when using Medrol Tablet (methylprednisolone):
- This medicine is used after eating or with food.
- Do not stop using this drug suddenly because it can result in an addisonian crisis which can be fatal. To prevent this, doctors usually prescribe this drug by tapering dose (increased gradually, stopped gradually).
- Systemic corticosteroids such as Medrol Tablet (methylprednisolone) are known to be excreted in breast milk. Because this drug can inhibit growth, interfere with endogenous corticosteroid production, or cause other undesirable effects, you should use Medrol Tablet (methylprednisolone) during breastfeeding to avoid.
- Medrol Tablets drugs that can cause insomnia and mood disorders.
- Avoid contact with measles and chickenpox sufferers, because users of Medrol Tablet (methylprednisolone) will experience a decrease in the immune system so that it is more easily infected.
Use of Medrol Tablet for pregnant women
The FDA (United States Food and Drug Administration) categorizes methylprednisolone in category C with the following explanation:
Research on animal reproduction has shown adverse effects on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but if the potential benefits can be guaranteed, the use of drugs in pregnant women can be carried out despite the enormous potential risk.
Although the results of studies in animals are not always equivalent to results in humans, the use of Medrol Tablets for pregnant women should be avoided. If it is not really needed or therapy with drugs or other means is still possible, you should not use this drug.
drug interactions
Medicines containing the active ingredient methylprednisolone interact with the following drugs:
- If given along with potassium-depleting agents (for example, amphotericin B, diuretics), you should be aware of the possibility of hypokalemia, cardiac enlargement and congestive heart failure.
- Macrolide antibiotics cause a significant decrease in methylprednisolone clearance thereby increasing the potential for side effects.
- Methylprednisolone inhibits the warfarin response, therefore, the coagulation index must be monitored regularly to maintain the desired anticoagulant effect.
- Methylprednisolone can increase blood glucose concentration, adjusting the dose of antidiabetic drugs may be needed.
- Methylprednisolone causes a decrease in the serum concentration of isoniazid.
- Cholestyramine can increase oral methylprednisolone clearance.
- Giving in conjunction with cyclosporine will increase the activity of both drugs. This increases the risk of seizures.
- Estrogen (including oral contraceptives) can reduce the hepatic metabolism of methylprednisolone, thereby increasing its effect.
- Drugs that induce cytochrome P450 3A4 (eg Barbiturates, Phenytoin, Carbamazepine, Rifampin), enzyme activity can increase corticosteroid metabolism so that the dose of Medrol Tablet (methylprednisolone) needs to be increased.
- Drugs that inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (for example, ketoconazole, macrolide antibiotics such as erythromycin and troleandomycin) have the potential to produce an increase in the concentration of methylprednisolone plasma.
- Ketoconazole significantly reduces methylprednisolone metabolism thereby increasing the risk of methylprednisolone side effects.
- Use with NSAIDs should be aware of the increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.
